How to Save Money with Halogen Bulbs

Did you see the Denver Post article about 100 watt incandescent light bulbs no longer being available?

The author wrote about alternatives to standard incandescent bulbs being halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL) and LED, as well as the cost of each of those alternatives. The most valuable statement in that article was that consumers need to give careful thought to what type of light bulb they choose. To that we would add especially if their current lighting is controlled by dimmers, as few CFLs and only certain LEDS are dimmable.

People who are interested in saving energy, we recommend halogen bulbs controlled by dimmers. Dimmers are proven to not only save energy, but greatly extend the life of the bulb(s).

I have twelve 50 watt halogen bulbs in the recessed lights in my kitchen. They are controlled by a dimmer, and in the 8 years since those lights were installed, I've only replaced 2 of the bulbs! The other great thing is that I can have the lights on full brightness when when cooking or cleaning up, but dim them down to almost "night light" levels for the rest of the evening. I can have the lights on, but dimmed, in any room I want to make a little less gloomy on a cloudy day without worrying about running up the electric bill.

Dimmers come in many styles that will match your existing light switches, most are less expensive than LED bulbs, and do not have the disposal problems associated with CFLs. Dimmers are so cost effective and allow so much versatility, they should be in the mix of energy saving options.

Replace the batteries in your smoke detector or replace the detector itself

It’s that time of year again when, aswe set our clocks back, we are reminded to replace the batteries inour smoke detectors. Have you ever wondered though, if the detectoritself needs to be replaced? Good question.

The answer is yes! The National FireProtection Association (NFPA) recommends replacing smoke detectorsevery 10 years*. The electronic components in smoke detectors aresubject to failure over time. The NFPA suggests there is a 30% chanceof smoke detector failure if the detector isn’t replaced in 10years. The probability of failure jumps to 50% for a smoke detectorthat has been in use over 15 years.

While you’re pondering that, are youaware that since 2009 Colorado has required carbon monoxide detectorsin all residential buildings**? It’s true. And while batteryoperated units meet the requirements, a much greater level of safetyis achieved by having hardwired, interconnected detectors in yourhome.

Here’s what we recommend: if yoursmoke detectors are more than 10 years old, replace them. And, sinceyou’re getting new detectors anyway, upgrade the appropriatedetector locations to combination smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.
